Maritime
MACCU (Maritime Credit Cooperative Union) was founded by a group of four seafarers with a vision to pool their savings and provide low-interest loans exclusively to seafarers. This initiative aimed to address the challenge faced by seafarers in obtaining loans from traditional banks due to the nature of their short-term employment contracts. By channeling their savings through MACCU, seafarers could benefit from higher interest rates than those offered by conventional banks. The inaugural office was established at the Nungua Barrier, commencing operations on July 4th, 2017.
Over time, MACCU has expanded its reach and now includes members from the broader communities of Nungua Barrier, Sakumono, Spintex, and Tema West. Recognizing the growing membership in the Fise-Amasaman area, a collection point was established there in May 2020. Presently, MACCU proudly serves a membership base of eight hundred individuals, fostering financial inclusion and empowerment within the seafaring and local communities.
